Creating new structures and flower beds

For us, this gardening season begins with a big change that we have been planning for over a year together with Sebastian Conrad from Haute Jardin. To break up the large meadow area behind the house and give our seating area a lively setting, new perennial beds are being created here.

The seating area – the ruins of the former wash house – was one of our favorite places from the moment we first set foot on the property in 2018. Since then, we have spent many hours there enjoying good food and good company. The new planting will give this space a unique character: exciting views from inside the ruins and, at the same time, more seclusion from the outside world.

Before we even started planting, however, we spent several weeks preparing the area. First, we transferred the shapes designed by Sebastian from paper to the garden. Then we had to cut the sod from the approximately 100 square meter area by hand. Around the ruins, we came across all kinds of rubble, old clay pipes, and other surprises – not surprising, since there used to be other small buildings and stables next to the wash house. To hint at this original state in the design, we used the field stones that were uncovered during the construction to build a dry stone wall, which we used to enclose one of the beds. Now we are very excited to see how the perennials will develop in their first season.
