JUN 2024
A hesitant early summer in the kitchen garden
Our garden is rarely bathed in such beautiful evening light in early summer. June has been wet and cold – the nights are barely reaching 10 degrees Celsius, and even during the day, temperatures are struggling to climb higher. For heat-loving vegetable plants such as peppers, chili peppers, eggplants, and squash, this is a bumpy start to the season.
Snails see things very differently, and aphids are also targeting the weakened plants. When everything comes together, gardening can suddenly feel more like damage control than summer joy, which is a challenging phase. Nevertheless, nature maintains its balance: when one thing weakens, another visibly thrives. Crisp lettuce, kohlrabi, sweet peas en masse, delicious cauliflower heads, fennel, and aromatic herbs end up in the harvest basket.
