We would love to stop time in autumn, when trees and bushes shine in the most beautiful colours. This fragile moment when the leaves prepare to take their farewell and even the slightest breeze is able to carry them away. For us pure beauty, for the trees a protective mechanism. A large part of the water they absorb through their roots evaporates through the leaves. In icy cold with frozen ground, water absorption is not possible, so trees and shrubs also limit evaporation by shedding their leaves. As soon as the days get shorter in autumn and temperatures drop, they shut down photosynthesis, which breaks down the green leaf pigment chlorophyll. Now all the wonderful other pigments appear: yellow, red, orange, brown.
